The Professional (Higher) Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy is awarded by the University of Dublin, Trinity College and is a registerable qualification with the Dental Council.

The initial core course – Introduction to Clinical Practice – is delivered in the Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) and lasts for 20 days over alternate weeks between the end of August and October, after which students will train in their work placements under direct supervision of an orthodontic specialist or consultant orthodontist for approximately eleven months. During the period of work placement, students will return to DDUH for fourteen training days, which are spread over the remaining months.

The programme is aimed at those who have a qualification in either Dental Hygiene or Dental Nursing, have at least two years’ post-qualification workplace experience (private orthodontic practice / public health orthodontic clinic) and are listed on the appropriate register maintained by the Dental Council.
